Material Upgrade breaths new life into your old or poor quality materials. You can up-res, deblur, unwarp and fix defects, all in one awesome module.

Recycle depreciated content and make it new again with one of the most exciting modules of ArtEngine. The Material Upgrade module allows you to increase the native resolution of an image without any loss of quality, by hallucinating new materials and details using a neural network. There are huge catalogues of materials that have become outdated by the increasing standards of today, and this feature renders them useful again.

Style Transfer allows you to apply the artistic style of one material to the content of another. This method requires two images as an input, and outputs a single image. It is a technique that allows artists to leverage existing material, and re-purpose it in a new style, in order to adapt it to new projects. This feature allows you to rejuvenate large libraries of content, and quickly homogenize disparate textures into a single theme.

3D Studios need to have access to services that sustainably reduce the time their 3D artists spend on creating high quality 3D assets.

The Material Update Module is one of the most exciting and commercially beneficial uses of the ArtEngine product. It can be used to up-res images without any loss of quality, by hallucinating new materials. It can also transfer the style of one material to another.

Take low res images, and using the neural networks of ArtEngine increase the native resolution of the image, without loss of quality Update and recycle catalogues of old materials.

Apply the artistic style of one material to the contents of another! This requires two images as an input, and outputs a single image, allowing you to leverage existing material for new projects.

Remove warps from imperfect materials. Automatically detect shaded gradients and remove them, for uniform results. Remove blocky artifacts from jpeg compression.

Material Upgrade Use Case

Use Case: Increasing resolutions.

Time saved: Instead of spending time on the creation of new assets, artists can simply repurpose older ones.

Studios have large banks of resources from previous projects, perhaps going back some years which do not reach the standard of contemporary work. Using Artomatix Artists can take those old assets, and treat them to bring them up to current standards. Using the up-res node small resolutions are sharpened, allowing them to more readily slot into a current project.

Rendering accounts for a large part of the time and cost that goes into a HD production. With the recent hike in demand for 4K content, this effectively quadruples the average $500k rendering budget for a 90 minute HD feature.

The standard industry approach today is to use bicubic interpolation to increase the resolution of the image and then to sharpen it using signal processing, which can’t add new details to the image, it can just emphasize the details that are already there.

Artomatix uses neural nets to easily and effectively up-res and remaster both old and new video content, which hasn’t been possible until now. Our neural Networks can imagine new plausible details, it can also de-blur, deliver JPEG artifact removal and gradient removal with impressive results.

Style Transfer

The Material Upgrade Module from ArtEngine also allows you to change the style of an input material and match it to a target style while keeping the PBR information and maintaining the input resolution. This enables you to breath new life into your assets and experiment with a range of artistic styles.

The Style Transfer feature of Material Upgrade, allows you to apply the visual style of a source image to the other textures used in a project.

Potential uses range from automatically up-resing PlayStation 2-era textures for reuse in modern games to converting textures generated via photogrammetry to a form suitable for use in stylised titles.
